Ethical funds are increasingly popular, more and more of our clients are placing greater emphasis on a socially responsible approach to investing.
This is a developing arena; not all propositions classified as an ethical investment are the same.
The United Nations supports specified principles based on the notion that environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, such as climate change and human rights, can affect the performance of investment portfolios and should therefore be considered alongside more traditional financial factors when investing. Now nearly 30% of global investments claim to have some ESG component. ESG funds will nearly always exclude companies involved with fossil fuels, tobacco and armaments.
“Ethical” investment funds draw the net tighter, by excluding all Pharma companies involved in any animal testing.
“Impact Investing” takes things even further seeking out companies, organisations and funds with the intention to generate social and environmental impact through their products, services and business practices.
Different factors are important to different clients. In addition to this there is a challenge to balance a client’s attitude to risk and reward with their ethical stance as a number of larger companies are excluded from the investment universe due to the ethical criteria. Consequently, we have built model portfolios with Ethical funds to a Cautious/Moderate and Moderate risk rating giving a balance approach between ethical contribution and sound investment strategy.
For clients who have an absolute stance on ethical investments we can build bespoke portfolios according to their specific needs, within the limitations of what is available within what we consider to be sound investment funds.
